Teaser Poster For "The X Files 2" Unveiled

The teaser poster for the upcoming "X Files" movie has been released.

The Lone Ranger Rides Again?

"Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Mask of Zorro" scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio are in final negotiations to write a live-action big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" for Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer says The Hollywood Reporter.
The project will be made by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films in association with Entertainment Rights.

"Ranger," owned by Classic Media, began life as a 1930s radio show. Its popularity led to movie serials, TV shows, comic strips and comic books, toys, novels and more.

The hero's origin story begins with a group of Texas Rangers chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.

Despite the long-standing presence in pop culture, however, "Ranger" has not enjoyed success in modern times. The character's most recent shot at the big screen, 1981's "The Legend of the Lone Ranger," failed so badly that the film's star, Klinton Spilsbury, never worked in Hollywood again. In 2003, WB Network aired a TV movie that served as a backdoor pilot, but it also bit the dust.

Part of the problems are the character's tropes -- wearing a mask, using only silver bullets, a creed that includes not killing your fellow man, the exclamation "Hi-yo Silver, away!" -- which can seem musty to today's audiences.

Rossio and Elliott, however, do have experience bringing back genres that seemed passe. The CAA-repped duo wrote "The Mask of Zorro," the hit adventure movie featuring one of the Ranger's contemporaries, as well as Disney's "Pirates" franchise, which breathed new life into the old skull and crossbones.

Bruckheimer is producing "Ranger," and Bruckheimer Films' Mike Stenson and Chad Oman are executive producing. Jason Reed is overseeing at Disney.

"The Lone Ranger"
Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio are going from "shiver me timbers!" to "Hi-ho Silver!"

Sci-Fi Channel Shows Interest In Cancelled "Jericho"

Carol Barbee, executive producer of CBS' canceled post-apocalyptic series Jericho, told SCI FI Wire that talks are ongoing to find the show another home, perhaps on a cable network.

"I can't really say [much] about specifics, and, ... partially, it's because I'm not the one having those conversations," Barbee said in an interview on March 24, the eve of the show's final episode. "[CBS] Paramount [Television, which produces the show,] has been pursing it, and our agents have been into that, so, you know, I am pushing those people and coming up with ideas to have those people pursue."

Barbee wouldn't offer details about any talks. "There were several ideas that have been floated, and there was some interest, but we'll have to see," she said. "It wasn't something that could be sewn up before we were going to air the finale. ... It would have been better had we been able to announce one with the other, but it just didn't happen that fast."

Barbee said that she and the show's cast and crew got official word of the show's cancellation at the end of last week, in time to choose one of two endings for the season finale: A cliffhanger or a series ender. "We were told that they were having a meeting on Thursday, ... internally at CBS, to decide which of the endings to show for this Tuesday night's finale, and then we were given the heads up after that meeting that they were going to show the alternate [ending, with the series finale], which obviously to us meant that we were going to finish our run on CBS," Barbee said. Barbee asked CBS to delay its formal announcement for 24 hours so she could inform the cast and crew; the news broke on Friday.

If Jericho is not picked up for another season by a TV network, Barbee said that she could envision it living on in some other form. "There's definitely an Internet series to be had, and we always talked about a graphic novel, and ... a movie," Barbee said. "I mean, there are lots of things that I could easily see as a way to continue the story."

But time may be running out. Jericho wrapped its second season of episodes back in November, just as the writers' strike was beginning. Since then, the cast and crew have been freed to pursue other projects, and the show's sets and backlot have been dismantled and either destroyed or put into storage. Barbee herself has moved on to another series, Swingtown, created by Jericho alumnus Mike Kelley, about the lives of couples experimenting with sexual and social mores in a 1970s Chicago suburb, which will air on CBS this summer and is shooting on the same stages once occupied by Jericho.

Looking back on Jericho, Barbee was pleased that it attracted a core of die-hard fans who were responsible for getting CBS to resurrect the show for a second season. "We appreciated the second life that we had, and we feel like we've made the most of it, and we will just be forever indebted to the fans for taking us on this amazing ride," she said. "I think it will always be a highlight in our careers, that we got to be a part of that." Jericho's finale, "Patriots and Tyrants," airs March 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

"Supernatural" Star Padalecki Vs. Jason in "Friday The 13th" Remake

Jared Padalecki is in final negotiations to star in the remake of "Friday the 13th" that Platinum Dunes is producing for New Line and Paramount.

Marcus Nispel is directing from a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing.

Paramount released the original "Friday" in 1980, introducing horror icon Jason with a brief appearance. The remake will focus on the serial killer, who will wear his now-iconic hockey mask. Padalecki will play the lead, who investigates what happened up at Crystal Lake.

Cale Boyter and Guy Stodel are overseeing for New Line. A release is planned for -- what else? -- Friday, Feb. 13, 2009.

CBS Cancels "Jericho" For A Second Time

Producers were told Thursday the show is ending its run on the broadcast network, sources said.

CBS will air the season finale next week with a resolution that helps give closure to fans.

After the first season concluded with an abrupt cut to black, fans famously inundated CBS with tens of thousands of pounds of peanuts to urge the network to continue the show.

For the seven-episode second season, producers shot two endings -- one that leaves viewers in suspense for a third round, another that is more conclusive.

The ending chosen by CBS will wrap up the final season's storyline, where the nuclear war survivors of a Kansas town struggled under a violent occupation by a government contractor.

"The March 25th episode of Jericho will be the series finale," CBS said in a statement. "Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more. We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts."

Tuesday's finale doesn't entirely slam the door on the series, but is notably different from the cliffhanger version, sources said. The ending also doesn't entirely preclude the possibility of "Jericho" finding a second life on cable. The high cost of the production, however, will likely prevent a continuation of the show.

Despite the erosion of broadcast ratings in recent years, the massive protest that saved "Jericho" last year has been called the largest fan effort ever to try and halt a network cancellation of a series.

The outcry put CBS in a tough position, whether to renew a show that has below-the-line ratings, yet unprecedented fan support. "Jericho" also performed well online on CBS.com and in iTunes downloads.

Unfortunately for the network and fans, the second season's Nielsen ratings were even lower than the first. The most recent episodes have averaged about a 1.9 rating among adults 18 to 49 in the show's Tuesdays at 10 p.m. time period. The network's decision to cancel the show still might not have been easy, but it was easier to see coming.

"'Jericho' is unique because the fans saved it -- watching it on the Internet and streaming and iTunes downloads, all those things that are not being counted," said executive producer Carol Barbee in a recent interview. "That's what 'Jericho' will be known for."

"Hogan's Heroes" Star Ivan Dixon Dead At 76

Ivan Dixon, an actor, director and producer best known for his role as Kinchloe on the 1960s television series "Hogan's Heroes," has died. He was 76.Dixon died Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte after a hemorrhage and of complications from kidney failure, said his daughter, Doris Nomathande Dixon of Charlotte.

Actor Sidney Poitier said the two men became friends after Dixon was his stunt double in the 1958 movie "The Defiant Ones."

"As an actor, you had to be careful," Poitier said in a statement. "He was quite likely to walk off with the scene."

Dixon began his acting career on Broadway in plays including "The Cave Dwellers" and "A Raisin in the Sun." On film, he appeared in "Something of Value," "A Raisin in the Sun," "A Patch of Blue," "Nothing But a Man" and the cult favorite "Car Wash."

But he was probably best known for the role of U.S. Staff Sgt. James Kinchloe on "Hogan's Heroes," a satire set in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Kinchloe, in charge of electronic communications, could mimic German officers on the radio or phone.

While her father was most proud of work in plays such as "A Raisin in the Sun" and for films such as "Nothing But a Man," he had no mixed feelings about being recognized for the role of Kinchloe, his daughter said.

"It was a pivotal role as well, because there were not as many blacks in TV series at that time," Nomathande Dixon said. "He did have some personal issues with that role, but it also launched him into directing."

Dixon also earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the CBS Playhouse special "The Final War of Olly Winter."

In addition to acting on television, he also directed hundreds of episodic shows, including "The Waltons," "The Rockford Files," "Magnum, P.I." and "In the Heat of the Night."

Born April 6, 1931, in New York City, Dixon graduated in 1954 from North Carolina Central University in Durham.

His honors include four NAACP Image Awards, the National Black Theatre Award and the Paul Robeson Pioneer Award from the Black American Cinema Society. He was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Directors Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild of America and the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 53 years, Berlie Dixon of Charlotte, and a son, Alan Kimara Dixon of Oakland, Calif. Two sons, Ivan Nathaniel Dixon IV and N'Gai Christopher Dixon, died previously.

At Dixon's request, the family said, no memorial or funeral is planned.

Mills Awarded $48.6 Million In McCartney Divorce

LONDON (AP) - Paul McCartney was ordered Monday to pay Heather Mills $48.6 million to settle their divorce.A document released by the Family Court said the judge awarded Mills a lump sum of $33 million plus the assets she currently holds worth $15.6 million."I'm so, so happy with this," Mills told reporters following the closed hearing. The court also ruled that the couple's 4-year-old daughter Beatrice should receive a "periodical payments order" of $70,000 per annum. On top of that, McCartney will pay for the child's nanny and school fees."I'm so glad it's over," Mills said at her impromptu news conference."It was an incredible result in the end to secure mine and my daughter's future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping and making a difference with - because you know it has been my life for 20 years," she said.McCartney left the court without making any statement. While pleased with the financial settlement, Mills intends to appeal to prevent publication of the details of the settlement for the couple's daughter.McCartney, 65, and Mills, 40, went to court last month to decide on Mills' share of his fortune, which had been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion.Judge Hugh Bennett, however, found that the total value of all of McCartney's assets, including his business assets, was about $800 million.Mills said the settlement vindicated her decision to fire her lawyers. The legal fees, she said, instead "could easily go to charity.""Obviously the court do not want a litigant in person to do well, it's against everything that they ever wish, so when they write the judgment up they're never going to make it look in favor," she said."But all of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between 20 and 30 million (pounds), Paul was offering a lot less than that, which you'll see in the judgment, and very much last minute to put me and Beatrice sadly through this ... incredibly sad."Mills had sought almost $250 million, while McCartney had said she should receive $31.6 million, including her own assets, which the court assessed at $15.6 million. She had harsh words for McCartney's lawyer, Fiona Shackleton, who was well known for representing Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana."She has called me many, many names before even meeting me when I was in a wheelchair," said Mills. The settlement has been a long time coming for the couple, who separated two years ago, after four years of marriage. At the time they said the parting was "amicable" and insisted "both of us still care about each other very much."But the split has grown fractious since McCartney filed for divorce alleging his wife's "unreasonable behavior."Mills - a former model whose left leg was amputated below the knee after a motorcycle accident in 1993 - claimed McCartney had failed to protect her and their daughter from slander, death threats and other abuse, and accused the media of persecuting her. In November, Mills said she had been "treated worse than a murderer or a pedophile," despite years of work for land mine victims and animal welfare charities.McCartney met Mills in 1999, the year after the death from breast cancer of his first wife, Linda. That marriage was one of rock's most enduring unions, and produced three children, including fashion designer Stella McCartney.Mills and McCartney married at an Irish castle in June 2002, amid rumors the former Beatle's children disapproved of their new stepmother. The couple's daughter was born the following year

"Horton Hears A Who" Reviewed

"Horton Hears A Who" Is Dr. Seuss At His Best.

by
Carey L. Fisher

After 2 live action adaptations of the works of Dr. Suess, the tedious and obnoxious "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" with Jim Carrey and the utterly terrible "The Cat In The Hat" with Mike Meyers, Hollywood has finally learned that animation is the key to success with the charming "Horton Hears A Who". Adapted from the Seuss book of the same name, the aforementioned Carrey lends his voice to the character of Horton, an eccentric and somewhat flaky elephant who suddenly finds himself charged with protecting the citizens of Whoville after rescuing their speck of a world from disaster. Horton vows to Whoville's Mayor, voiced by Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" co-star Steve Carrell, to find them a new home after their world is set adrift by blowing winds. Horton and Whoville's Mayor each share the same dilemma, persecution and ridicule from their respective worlds because no one will believe that each world coexists with the other. The film remains very faithful to the original book but the film pads the original story with some unneccesary scenes to stretch it out to a feature length film. And this, like the 2 previous live action Seuss movies, is it's one downfall. The story simply does not merit a film of this length and the movie could benefit from a shorter run time. However, the film is so charming and endearing that it saves itself in spite of it's shortcomings. The animation is breathtaking. Seuss's characters seem tailor made for this medium of animation. Carrey is simply wonderful as Horton and opts to not go as over the top as he usually does. Carrell is terrific as the hapless mayor fighting to save his world and find his voice as a true leader. Carol Burnett is a wonderfully vile villain as Horton's main nemesis, a prudish kangaroo who will go to any means necessary to ensure that Horton not upset the status quo with his mission to save Whoville. In her mind, Horton's "imaginary" world of Whoville is the Seuss equivalent of heresy. Will Arnett gives a scene stealing performance as Vlad, a vulture with a thick Russian accent who is dispatched by by Burnett's character to destroy the clover flower in Horton's posession that the small speck of Whoville rests upon. This leads to one of the most beautifully animated chase scenes ever and a scene with a vast cloverfield that is simply amazing to see.

Whether it was Seuss's intention or not, the kangaroo's mission to stop Horton from spreading the word about Whoville almost feels like religious intolerance. There are a lot more undertones and metaphors to this Seuss story than I ever realized as a child. "Horton Hears A Who" is one of the better animated films of the last few years and I hope this trend continues with some of Seuss's other works. Seuss was a true genius and "Horton Hears A Who" is a true testament to just how talented this man really was.

With rumors running rampant that Marvel is introducing characters onscreen that may lead to "The Avengers", thought I may as well post the trailer for the upcoming "Iron Man" as well.

"ER" And "Scrubs" Renewed

Variety reports that NBC has been talking with Warner Bros. TV about keeping the long-running medical drama "ER" in place for one more year. The trade says the network and studio are said to be close to an agreement in which a reduction on "ER's" license fee could keep the show going for a 15th season."ER" was expected to end its lengthy run this year, but the writers' strike and work stoppage put a crimp in those plans. Now that production has resumed, "ER" is delivering between four and six more episodes this season. But rather than end on such a short note, NBC may now want to make some noise by bringing "ER" back for one final farewell season. It is still unclear how many episodes NBC may license next season. As for the NBC's other medical series that was slated to retire this June, "Scrubs" is also now expected to make a return next year. Star John C. McGinley was even quoted this week as saying the show's long-rumored move from NBC to ABC is a done deal.

The Beatles Finally Arrive On iTunes

Enjoyed by (likely) billions of people worldwide, the Beatles are so popular, they've even had their songs rocketed off into space. Despite the group's global popularity, none of its albums have ever shown up on iTunes, due, unfortunately, to a bit of a legal tiff between Apple, the dudes behind iTunes, and Apple, the group's record label. Well, all the parties involved -- namely, Paul McCartney and Apple (computer) -- have finally settled their differences and the Beatles invasion of iTunes is set to begin. McCartney indicated last year that he was working on the deal, even saying it would happen in 2008. Indeed it has happened, and it's apparently setting Apple (the computer guys) back $400 million, which will be distributed across all the members of the Fab Four (including the estates of the dearly departed ones), plus Apple (the music recording guys) and, of course, Michael Jackson, who does indeed own the publishing rights to many Beatles songs. There's been no specific mention of exactly when the albums will show up online, but it shouldn't take long.

CW Gives Early Renewal to Several Shows

In a surprisingly early announcement, the CW has given a green light for an 8th season for “Smallville”. This announcement comes after the long running show was rushed back into production following the end of the writer’s strike in order to extend the show‘s shortened 7th season. “Smallville”, which tells the story of Clark Kent before he became Superman, has enjoyed a ratings resurgence during it’s last two seasons and the CW seems confident that this resurgence will continue. In addition to “Smallville”, the CW also announced new seasons for “Supernatural”, “Gossip Girl”, “One Tree Hill”, “Everybody Hates Chris” and “America’s Next Top Model”.
It remains to be seen whether “Smallville” cast members Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) will be returning for season 8. All three actors were only under contract through season 7. Tom Welling (Clark Kent) , John Glover (Lionel Luthor), Erica Durance (Lois Lane), Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy Olsen) and Laura Vandervoort (Kara) are already signed for an 8th season.
